The Magistrates’ Court is the lowest tier of the criminal courts in England and Wales and deals with less serious offences. All criminal cases begin in the Magistrates’ Court. A bench of three magistrates, or a District Judge, oversees the proceedings and most cases are concluded at this level. More serious cases may be sent to the Crown Court if the magistrates consider that the seriousness of the matter exceeds their sentencing powers or expertise.

If you have been charged at a police station and are due to appear before a Magistrates’ Court, you should consider instructing a solicitor. MB Law has a dedicated team with extensive experience in Magistrates’ Court representation.

You may be entitled to legal aid once your case reaches court. For further information, please refer to the Legal Aid section.
